The Portland Collection at Welbeck

May 2016

We’ve had a busy start to 2016. Our most prestigious project so far must be our work on the new Portland Gallery which houses The Portland Collection at Welbeck in Nottinghamshire. A wonderful private view marked the official gallery opening on 20 May.

Welbeck’s historic Portland Collection of fine and decorative art has been amassed over the centuries by the Dukes of Portland and their families. Masterpieces include Michelangelo’s Madonna del Silenzio (c.1538), a rarely seen Van Dyck painting of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford and the pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution in 1649.

Lawn designed the gallery interpretation and also the first publication to tell the complete story of one families collection over four centuries.

‘...Beautifully produced in Florence, it is a useful addition to the literature of the English country house, as well as a celebration of the revival of Welbeck and a visual feast of rare and beautiful things’.

John Martin Robinson, Country Life, April 2016
